KTVU Wrote “SAN FRANCISCO — A source told KTVU Wednesday that the man arrested by San Francisco police for a brutal cab driver robbery and stabbing that left the victim hospitalized had left his cell phone in the vehicle.San Francisco police issued a press release Wednesday afternoon that announced the arrest of 26-year-old Pittsburg resident Bruce Griffin for the attack. The suspect was taken into custody at Post and Larkin streets at 1:40 A.M.The attack happened at about 7:15 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of States Street. Griffin, who was a passenger in a new Regents Cab SUV, allegedly beat the cabbie, 53-year-old Balvinder Singh, and stabbed him several times in the face and the chest before robbing him, police said. The press release noted that “investigative leads and a citywide search by officers from all the district stations based on a description of the suspect led to the arrest.” KTVU has learned from a source that the suspect left his cell phone inside the cab.Griffin was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was charged with robbery and attempted homicide and remains in police custody. This was not the first time Griffin has targeted a cabbie; he was on parole for a similar robbery of a cab driver that occurred on January 24, 2003.The incident left area residents in the Castro shaken.Jim Wallace, who lives in the neighborhood, was one of several people who rushed outside their homes when they heard the attack.“I looked out the window and saw two guys violently fighting,” Wallace told KTVU. “It looked like they were punching each other in the face. So I had the phone right there and immediately called 911. The neighborhood really reacted. Everybody came out.”When he and other neighbors got down to the cab on usually safe States Street, Wallace said he realized the cab driver had been repeatedly stabbed, not punched.“I don’t know if he [the assailant] was a fare or not but I’m pretty sure he was a fare,” Wallace said. “They [other witnesses of the attack and the police] said they had him on camera in the cab.”Another neighbor, a paramedic, tried to stop the bleeding while others chased the robber up the street and down the Vulcan steps before he got away.“He was covered in blood,” said witness Isaac Joseph. “It was pretty bad. He was in and out of consciousness.”Singh was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for his injuries, which were considered to be life-threatening, according to authorities. The cab was equipped with surveillance camera and witnesses told KTVU there was a $12 fare on the cab meter.Singh had recovered enough from his injuries that he was released from the hospital on Wednesday. A newlywed and stepfather of a teenage son, Singh started driving in San Francisco less than a year ago after moving from New York City where he also drove cabs.In the press release issued Wednesday afternoon, the San Francisco Police Department expressed its gratitude to the many citizens who came to the aid of the victim after the attack and who provided valuable information to police that helped in the apprehension of the suspect.”
SF Gate Wrote ”
A taxi driver was beaten and stabbed before being robbed in the Castro district Monday night.
The suspect, described as a young man wearing a hooded black and gray sweatshirt, attacked the taxi driver at 7:12 p.m. on the 200 block of States Street. After beating the driver, the suspect pulled a knife and stabbed him several times before robbing him of his fares, said San Francisco Police Officer Boaz Mariles.
“This is just a horrific incident,” Mariles said. “All for what – his daily wage of taxi fares?”
The cab driver, a man in his 50s whose name was not released, was reported in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital with life threatening stab wounds.
Investigators would not say whether the suspect was a passenger in the cab, but if he was, Mariles said, there is likely some video of the suspect because most taxi cabs in San Francisco are equipped with cameras.”
There are no barriers in cabs to protect the driver from attacks like this. My understanding is that without the plastic barriers it gives the customer a more personal experience.

Estimated Airport Taxi Rates (typical and before tip / gratuity):
- SFO San Francisco Airport to downtown San Francisco ~$45
For trips over 15 miles, taxi companies charge an additional 50 percent of the cab fare. For example, if your fare comes to $100, you will pay $150. You are also responsible for any bridge or highway tolls.
San Francisco does not allow taxi companies to charge you an additional baggage fee, so no driver should attempt this. Also, drivers cannot refuse you if you plan to only go a short distance, such as a block or two. If there is a fare dispute, drivers legally have to take the passenger to the nearest police station so that police can help resolve the issue.
